Bryan Montgomery

RIBA award

Bryan Montgomery has been a friend and help to the RIBA, architects and architecture since 1952 when he was appointed Managing Director of the International Building Exhibition - now Interbuild - and then, in 1988 Chairman, taking over from Molly Montgomery, herself an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA.

It was 2000 - how time flies. Here is the citation as read out on the evening. (these days we only read shortened versions)

Bryan Montgomery developed Interbuild's already great reputation into a major world-class exhibition, part of the international company Andry Montgomery, the largest independent and privately owned group of exhibition organisers, managers and consultants in the world. Bryan was himself an advisor and consultant on trade fairs throughout the world, including in developing countries for the UN. Such consultancy work extended into several publications for UNIDO, UNCTAD/GATT and other international bodies.

He has held, and in some cases still does, high honorary office in many world trade organisations, such as President, since 1994, of the Union des Foires International and Vice President before that for seven years. He has been a member since 1992 of the Court of World Traders and was its Master in 1995.

Alongside all this, he has had a long-time interest in, and supported, building conservation: Chairman of the Building Museum since 1988, Vice Chairman of the Building Conservation Trust From 1979 to 1994.

The Interbuild Fund, of which Bryan is chairman, has consistently funded RIBA initiatives of many different kinds. He has been a valued Trustee of the British Architectural Library Trust since 1980 and was its Chairman from 1989 to 1991. He is associated with many other charities and organisations connected with the building industry. Another link with architecture is his interest and expertise in contemporary art and sculpture of which he holds a notable collection. He has served as Honorary Treasurer of the Contemporary Art Society. The Montgomery Sculpture Trust supports sculptors making work for outdoors and site-specific work. A further interest is in music to which, as in everything else he does, he or the trusts he has founded, give practical support.
